Underprivileged children from a Kenyan school have been provided with plates to eat from thanks to the efforts of a fundraising woman from Abbots Langley.

Students from Kyambai Primary School in Kenya, were using old plastic containers and lids to hold their food, but now have aluminium plates to eat from after Esther Muoso rallied a number of Hertfordshire schools together to raise money.

Ms Muoso, of Parsonage Close, said: “The support I have had from schools including Funny Farm Nursery, Bedmond Village Primary and Francis Combe Academy has been unbelievable.

“People have donated their old school uniforms, held charity events – all to help Kyambai villagers.

“When I visited Kyambai last year, I noticed that many of the children were recycling old lids and containers to hold their food.

“One girl had only a small lid, which wouldn’t hold an adequate meal and when I asked if the children had plates I found out they didn’t.

“The containers were unhygienic, so I thought it was important that the students in the village school were provided with plates.”

Encouraged by mother-of-two Ms Muoso, Bedmond Village Primary School held a ‘table top sale’ at the beginning of January and raised about £300 to pay for the 400 aluminium plates now being used by the Kenyan students.

Ms Muoso has worked tirelessly to raise money for Kenya Charity, the organisation which aims to help provide food and clothing for children living in Kyambai, after she saw first-hand the struggle they face for basic provisions.

Ms Muoso who first started fundraising for Kyambai following the death of her firstborn, is now encouraging others to get involved.

She said: “I needed to do something positive at the time and for me this was it.

“If I could adopt all the children of Kyambai, I would. Their faces light up when they see how much people care.

“Anyone can get involved – their small contribution makes a huge difference.”

U.S. Congressman Urges Kenyan Committee to Uphold Right to Life

Posted by jambonewspot on February 3, 2010

WASHINGTON, DC, February 3, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Congressman Jeff Fortenberry of Nebraska has issued a statement urging Kenya’s Committee of Experts on Constitutional Review to uphold Kenya’s longstanding prohibition against abortion.

Fortenberry is a member of the House Democracy Partnership Commission, a bipartisan 20-member commission established by the House of Representatives in 2005 to support the development of independent democratic legislatures. He has worked with Kenyan parliamentarians on issues related to oversight and government reform.

“I fully support Article 25 of the Kenyan draft constitution, which wisely and explicitly continues Kenya’s affirmation of the right to life beginning at conception,” said Fortenberry. “It is appalling that leaders in Africa are being systematically pressured to slacken their abortion laws in the belief that such a policy prescription leads to ‘economic progress.’ It is also scandalous that abortion is misleadingly being attributed as ‘reproductive health care.’”

During deliberations on the Kenyan draft constitution, language that would compromise the right to life of unborn persons was struck by the Parliamentary Select Committee.  On January 29, a version affirming the right to life was submitted to the Committee on Experts, who will now work on the draft before submitting it to the National Assembly for approval.

“I implore the Committee of Experts to uphold this language and be magnanimous enough and loving enough to say yes to life, boldly welcoming the precious children that may hold the future of our world in their hands,” Fortenberry said. “All women around the world deserve better than abortion and we must work to ensure that all communities receive the support they need.”

Fortenberry is also the author of the Care for Life Act, a bill that seeks to encourage and assist women throughout their pregnancies and after childbirth by alleviating financial, social, emotional, and other difficulties that may otherwise lead to abortion.
