A Kenyan national, Erick Gichuki, shocked Bontleng residents when he invaded his former girlfriend, Carol Nyambura Tutu’s residence with petrol and set her and her room ablaze at around 1 am recently. Both are recuperating at Princess Marina Hospital, Gaborone.

The victim suffered serious body burns from the waist downwards. Gichuki is under police guard.

All the furniture, two beds, a refrigerator, chest of drawers, chairs, television set and a home theatre system, and identity documents, among other things, were destroyed in the inferno. One of the victim’s roommates, who identified himself as Kabo Sam, says he was woken up by shouts.

“I heard her screaming for help. At first I thought it was one of their usual fights and I ignored for a while until I saw flames leaping from the door,” he says.

According to other eyewitnesses, Gichuki also caught fire and dashed off the plot.

He was advised to roll in the sand to stop the flames after which he fled in fear of what he had done. Tutu miraculously evacuated the room and had the fire extinguished. Police were called in and the suspect later apprehended.

“He slipped and fell and that’s how he caught fire. He tried to lock me in the house and kill me. He wanted me dead, burnt to death for not accepting him.

This is painful and I have never been this hurt and in so much pain in my entire life,” she said. She also notes that her roommate, Rose, another Kenyan national who works for a salon at Tswana House, stole her money, about P9,000, and flew to Nairobi.

When asked about the incident, Gichuki said Tutu is his girlfriend and he did not mean to kill her but he wanted to commit suicide in her room. “I bought petrol for P50 from a filling station. I was angry and wanted to kill myself in her room because she had called me a homosexual,” he said.

Pastor Paul Oboseng Ketlhoiwe, who is in charge of the house where the incident occurred, said he has been trying to conduct some counselling for the couple who have been having problems for some time. He said problems started when Gichuki was asked to move out of the house since Tutu had a roommate. “At some point he threatened to kill her but I advised him that such statements were illegal in Botswana and he apologised.”

The Bontleng Police Station Commander was not available at the time of going to press.

Inter-sex convict tells of suffering

Denied education, rejected by a would-be marriage partner and subjected to inhuman treatment in prison.

This is the trail of suffering narrated to court on Tuesday by a double-sex prisoner seeking to introduce a third gender in the Kenyan law.

Richard Muasya attributes his troubles to the fact that, as a double-sex man, he is not recognised by the laws of the land.

He is now asking for a change in the statute books to accommodate him and others like him.

In a landmark case, Muasya, who was born with both male and female genitals, but passes off as a man, says he has been unable to get a birth certificate and, as a result, cannot achieve his academic ambitions.

His would-be wife walked away from him after she realised his condition, saying she could not live with a fellow woman, Muasya says.

He finds himself in a statutory framework that doesn’t have provisions for him and people like him.

The robbery convict says the law recognises only male and female sexes, which he terms unfair and discriminatory.

Under the international law and the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, everyone has a right to legal representation, Muasya says through lawyer John Chigiti.

But he argues that, under the Kenyan law, he doesn’t enjoy the protection of the law. The Kenyan law does not only fail to recognise people like him, but also lacks definition for such people.

Genetic condition

However, in international jurisdiction, a double-sex man is described as one who, because of his or her genetic condition, is born with reproductive organs that are not exclusively male or female.

He believes that, if the court orders his recognition, he will be able to get legal and travel documents, and maybe undergo corrective surgery.

But Christian lawyers want the court to ignore Muasya’s prayers, arguing that allowing a third gender would most likely open the floodgates for the teaching of homosexuality and lesbianism.

The hearing continues.

Kenya scientists seek HIV clues

Posted by jambonewspot on July 13, 2010

By Arthur Okwemba

Scientists in Nairobi have reported success in identifying three Kenyans whose immune system could hold the key to finding an HIV vaccine.

The researchers spoke a day after their colleagues at the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases announced that they had isolated an antibody that can protect a person from numerous strains of the Aids-causing virus.

Recently, Prof Omu Anzala, a University of Nairobi lecturer and Kenya Aids Vaccine Initiative (Kavi) director, said his team had identified the three with promising broadly neutralising antibodies.

Prof Anzala says these antibodies, isolated by Kavi and the International Aids Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) can disable 90 per cent of the HIV strains.

“This is the most exciting part of it; the ability of these antibodies to neutralise a wide range of the HIV strains,” he said.

The virus type predominant in Kenya is HIV-1, whose strains can be classified into groups M, N, O and P. Group M has subtypes A, B, C, D, F, G, H, J and K.

Subtypes A, C, D, and G are some of those circulating in Kenya.

Of the more than 200 people that have been followed by Kavi for several years, the latter subtypes have emerged as instrumental in the future development of a broadly neutralising antibody vaccine.

“So far, we have managed to isolate few individuals who have very promising results and now they are being studied to understand how their immune system is able to neutralise the virus,” says Prof Anzala, a virologist.

The ability to disable the HIV virus is being seen in both men and women whom Kavi has been studying for several months.

Scientists strongly believe with such the ability to stop the virus from infecting new cells, the people could hold the key to developing an effective Aids vaccine. Studies in primates have already shown that the anti-bodies can prevent HIV infection.

Those with such antibodies and who are able to stave off HIV replication in their bodies have come to be known as the elite controllers — those whose immune system can control the HIV viral load to less than 40 copies/mL, compared to over 30,000 in a person without such antibodies.

Felix Owino Accused of sexual battery of a juvenile in Fairfax County, Va

Felix Owino Accused of sexual battery of a juvenile in Fairfax County, Va

A priest who taught at Wheeling Jesuit University and served as associate pastor of St. Paul’s Parish in Weirton is being held without bond in the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center in Virginia, accused of sexual battery on a juvenile.

Lt. Sonny Cachuela, public information officer for the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office, said the Rev. Felix C. Owino, A.J., is charged with aggravated sexual battery of a minor under 13 years of age. Owino’s next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 2 in the Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston issued a news release Monday, stating it had suspended Owino from his priestly duties within the diocese, pending the outcome of his trial in Virginia. The diocese had learned Friday that Owino was arrested Thursday in Fairfax County.

According to information from diocesan spokesman Bryan Minor, Owino is a priest of the religious missionary congregation known as the Apostles of Jesus, the first African congregation of Catholic priests and brothers. He came to West Virginia last year as an instructor in the philosophy department at Wheeling Jesuit.

The university also issued a statement, noting Owino was on summer break from his teaching duties when the alleged battery occurred. He served until June as a faculty member in the philosophy department, but has no current responsibilities at the university and is not expected to return to campus.

During his time at Wheeling Jesuit, campus authorities received no student complaints about his conduct.

“This alleged behavior violates the core of who we are called to be as Christians and as a Jesuit, Catholic campus community whose mission demands that we dedicate ourselves to the care and protection of our students,” said Interim President Sister Francis Marie Thrailkill, OSU. “We encourage all students to report misconduct to the president’s office or their student advisor.”

Originally from Nairobi, Kenya, Owino was ordained in 1992 and is a member of the Religious Missionary Institute of the Apostles of Jesus, headquartered in Philadelphia, according to the university. He joined the faculty of Wheeling Jesuit in the fall 2008 term and taught for two consecutive terms, most recently instructing an online class. Prior to that, he worked at Magdalen College in New Hampshire and before that at Alvernia College in Reading, Pa.

“Bishop Michael J. Bransfield asks the community to pray for those involved in this incident, especially the minor,” the diocesan news release states. “May the healing power of our Lord, Jesus Christ, be with all abuse victims now and each day.”

Minor noted that suspected cases of sexual abuse by personnel of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston can be reported by calling one of the bishop’s designees at 888-434-6237. The designees are the Rev. Monsignor Frederick P. Annie, V.G., at ext. 267 and the Very Rev. Anthony Cincinnati, S.T.D., V.E., at ext. 260.
