Could you be suffering from couple burn out?

Posted by Administrator on October 29, 2010

Do you often find your partner annoying and cannot stand almost everything he does or says? Does he often irritate you or make “silly” mistakes that work you up? You might not know it, but you might be suffering from couple burn out. Many of us think that burnout is the curse of employees, yet the fact is that it is common in many relationships.

So what exactly brings about couple burnout?

It often rears its ugly head when your relationship fails to fulfill certain expectations that you had assumed would be met by your partner.

Most often, these expectations are unrealistic.

Worth noting is that burnout is a gradual process, therefore, don’t expect to wake up one day and find yourself tired of your spouse.

Initial signs are a slow fading of intimacy and love, accompanied by a general dissatisfaction in the relationship itself. In its extreme form, burnout could mark the breaking point of a relationship.

Physical Exhaustion

Interestingly, burnout could manifest itself through actual physical fatigue which sleep seems not to take away. You wake up feeling exhausted on Monday morning, even after spending most of the weekend in bed. Your stomach churns when you think of your spouse’s many ‘faults’. Each crime on his long list of misdemeanours gets magnified.

Emotional exhaustion

You feel emotionally drained, disillusioned, and resentful. You do not feel like explaining anything and the last thing you want to do is work through issues that crop up between the two of you. You are convinced that there is no hope for you in the relationship. You grow more and more unhappy. Everyday seems worse than the last. Life feels empty and meaningless.

Nothing seems to matter anymore. You’re frequently stressed out and feel there is no light at the end of the tunnel.

As bad as things are, you feel helpless to bring about change, you have given up the idea of changing your mate and you don’t have the energy or the inclination to try to change yourself and you feel trapped. This feeling of despair can lead to emotional breakdown.

Mental Exhaustion

This mostly manifests itself in low opinion of self, and in the negative attitude you have of everything concerning the relationship, particularly your partner. You no longer believe in the magic of love. You often think of leaving but have no idea where you would go to.

Kacc zeroes in on four ministers

The director of the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission PLO Lumumba gestures during an ethics conference at the Strathmore College October 29, 2010. He said Kacc was investigating four ministers over graft allegations. LIZ MUTHONI

Four Cabinet ministers and at least 45 senior heads of parastatals are under investigation in connection with corruption and other related economic crimes, the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission has said.

Kacc director PLO Lumumba, however, declined to name those facing the investigations, choosing to say that they will be named “in the fullness of time and that time may be very soon”.

Prof Lumumba indicated the the graft watchdog is investigating old affairs such as the Goldenberg cases, more recent ones such as the Anglo Leasing saga as well as recent cases such as the resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons and the importation of old vehicles.

“I think we are investigating no less than four Cabinet ministers and investigating no less than 45 heads of parastatals,” he told journalists at Strathmore University after a conference on ethics and sustainable development

“We are looking at closing down investigations and possible prosecution the old cases, which you know about- Anglo Leasing, Goldenberg,” said Prof Lumumba.

The Kacc has in the past been accused of failing to produce enough evidence for the successful prosecution of corruption cases, but Prof Lumumba was quick to defend the institution’s work.

“This is a relay race. We run our leg  and run it well and what others do in theirs is not within our prerogative.”

It has once again written to the British, Swiss and United States governments in an effort to get to the bottom of the two cases, in which Kenya lost billions in shady contracts, phantom deliveries and outright theft.

A 19-year-old high school student has eloped with a 40-year-old woman.

The Shimo La Tewa High School student, Eddy Bondora, was a Form Four candidate but he has given up school for the woman who is old enough to be his mother.

His parents, teachers and fellow students have been left dumbfounded after learning through the social network site, Facebook, and from his friends that he would not be sitting his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examinations.

Eight days after the examinations started, the teenager has not shown up and is now said to be living in Mtwapa with his lover. Fellow students said he started living with her at the beginning of this school term.

The attendance register shows that the boy has never reported for school since the beginning of this term and the administration assumed he was still at home.

Mrs Zainabu Bondora, the mother, said Eddy left home on the opening day together with his sister, a student at Waa Girls High School in Kwale, only to realise early this month that the boy never reported for school.

Mrs Bondora said when she asked his son’s classmates, they told her that Eddy was living with a woman in Mtwapa since the beginning of the term. “I did not believe what I was told by his classmates.

They told me my son had promised to come and sit the exams since they had completed the syllabus and opted to stay with the woman in Mtwapa, a few kilometres from the school,” Mrs Bondora said.

Police dismissed us

The distraught mother said they went to the woman’s home several times but were not allowed in. She had asked the police from Bamburi and Mtwapa to accompany them, but they refused to do so because they said he was an adult.

“Police dismissed us on the grounds that the boy is over 18 years and he has a right to make his own decision. I am asking anybody to help me find out where my child is,” said the mother as she burst into tears.

Mrs Bondora said Mtwapa villagers say they have seen the boy with the woman at different entertainment places in the town.

Shimo La Tewa High School principal Juma Mshimu said they were shocked since the boy was among the most disciplined students in the school.

“We learnt the boy was not at home on the examination rehearsal day,” said Mr Mshimu, adding that the student has been polite and he had been performing well in class.

The principal said they learnt the boy was in Mtwapa through Facebook. He said they used one of the students to communicate with the boy through the site.

“We have now learnt that the boy may have left Mtwapa for Malindi with his lover, but we do not know the exact location since he has recently cut back on his communication,” Mr Mshimu said.

His Facebook profile picture is of a dread-locked man. Attempts to initiate dialogue with him proved futile as he failed to post a response, two days after a request was left for him.

Man Held After Sitting Exam for Brother

Posted by Administrator on October 29, 2010

A middle-aged man was arrested for sitting a Form Four examination paper on behalf of his younger brother.

He was caught after writing the English paper (creative composition and essay) at Kebaroti Mixed Secondary School in Kuria East District.

He was locked up at the Kehancha Police Station pending an appearance in court.

District police boss Paul Wanjama said the man presented himself as candidate Joseph Boke, Index number 718204005, and sat the paper.

Police, acting on a tip-off, pounced on him at the end of the test.

Fled to Tanzania

District education officer Francis Onyango said the man, who is a trader, is an elder brother of the candidate.

The candidate fled to Tanzania soon after learning that his brother had been arrested.

The trader was a student at the school and sat for his examinations in 2008. He obtained a C-.

“We are also seeking to establish if the school and the exams officials were aware because it is not easy for an outsider to enter an examination room without being detected by teachers and exams officials at the school,” Mr Onyango said.

Kenyan anti- corruption official shot – police

Suru Tanna the anti-corruption officer who was shot in Kenya

Suru Tanna the anti-corruption officer who was shot in Kenya

NAIROBI Oct 28 (Reuters) – A senior official at Kenya’s anti-corruption agency was shot outside his house in the capital on Wednesday night, police said on Thursday.

A spokesman for the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission (KACC) said the reason for the attack on Suru Tanna, a member of its advisory board, was not yet known.

Tanna was in the intensive care unit at Nairobi Hospital after being shot by three men who stole a mobile phone and a jacket, police said.

The commission has cranked up a long-promised war on graft in Kenya, east Africa’s biggest economy, where corruption is endemic. The country was placed 154 out of 178 states in Transparency International’s global corruption index released on Tuesday.

“We don’t know the motive for the shooting and we don’t want to speculate. He does not have any direct input in ongoing corruption investigations and is usually briefed on such matters,” commission spokesman Nicholas Simani said.

The commission’s senior officials have security at all times and it had no plans to review security measures, he added.

Tanna is the chairman of the board of packaging company General Printers Ltd and a former chairman of the Kenya Association of Manufacturers.

The commission’s head said last week he would go after the “big fish” behind big corruption scandals, citing new powers granted by the new constitution. (Reporting by James Macharia; Editing by David Clarke and Angus MacSwan))

PS Thuita: Why I stepped aside

Posted by Administrator on October 27, 2010

PS Thuita Mwangi who resigned to allow investigations over sh1.1bln Tokyo embassy scandal

PS Thuita Mwangi who resigned to allow investigations over sh1.1bln Tokyo embassy scandal

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 27 – After diligently considering the full breadth of my duties and responsibilities as Permanent Secretary in the Foreign Affairs Ministry, and being mindful of the importance of the mandate of the Ministry and the need for the hardworking officers to give full attention to the continued delivery of professional service without disruption, I have decided to voluntarily step aside from the conduct and responsibilities of the Ministry in order to allow the competent Government Organs to fully and without impediment investigate all matters of concern raised in the Report of the Departmental Committee on Defence and Foreign Relations on construction, purchase and disposal of properties abroad.

I have consciously taken this decision as an expression of my confidence that at the conclusion of the on-going investigations by the Kenya Anti Corruption Commission, the appropriateness of my engagement with all aspects of the operations pertaining to this matter will undoubtedly be established.”

I step aside purely as a matter of personal dignity and professional integrity – indeed, the very same dignity and integrity I have upheld in the performance of my duties for more than twenty-two years of public service at various levels in the Government.

THUITA MWANGI, CBS
PERMANENT SECRETARY
MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

Kenyan foreign minister Moses Wetangula steps aside over graft saga

Foreign Affairs minister Moses Wetang'ula (left) leaves Parliament after its sitting October 26, 2010. He denied any direct role in the process through which the government acquired and sold property as detailed in the report of a Parliamentary committee. STEPHEN MUDIARI

Kenya Foreign Affairs minister Moses Wetang’ula has stepped aside to pave way for probe into the Sh1.1bn Tokyo embassy scandal.

“For the sake of Sirisia, Kenya, friends, PNU and family, I have decided to step aside to give government room for investigations,” he said during a news conference at the Ministry’s office in Nairobi.

He, however, maintained his innocence over the mega scandal that had threatened to end his career.

Mr Wetang’ula move comes just hours before Parliament was set to conclude debate on a report by the Defence and Foreign Relations Committee, which recommended that the minister and his permanent secretary step aside to facilitate investigations.

Earlier, PS Thuita Mwangi had communicated to President Kibaki his decision to leave office temporarily.

“I have consciously taken this decision as an expression of my confidence that at the conclusion of the on-going investigations by the Kenya Anti Corruption Commission, the appropriateness of my engagement with all aspects of the operations pertaining to this matter will undoubtedly be established,” he said in a statement.

“I step aside purely as a matter of personal dignity and professional integrity – indeed, the very same dignity and integrity I have upheld in the performance of my duties for more than twenty-two years of public service at various levels in the Government.”

On Wednesday, the minister denied responsibility for the scandal in Parliament and instead shifted blame to civil servants in his Ministry.

“The long and short of it is this; ministers don’t deal with transactions. We deal with what we are given; ministers only deal with policies,” Mr Wetang’ula said.

“The minister does not procure, the minister does not sign cheques, the minister does not sign vouchers, the minister does not chair committees, the minister does not deal with budgets…” he said during his presentation to the House.

The report reveals that Foreign Affairs Ministry officials ignored recommendations from civil servants and independent valuers to saddle the public with huge bills that could have been avoided.

The Kenya Anti Corruption Commission (Kacc) is now also investigating embassies in Islamabad (Pakistan), Brussels (Belgium), Lagos (Nigeria) and Cairo in Egypt.

In Lagos, the ministry sold two plots said to have been in “one of the choicest areas” of the former political capital of West Africa’s largest country.

The plots were next to the homes of former Nigerian president Ibrahim Babangida, the residence of the British High Commissioner and the residence of the governor of Lagos, among others.

A government team had recommended that Kenya retains the properties but the ministry sold them, claiming they wanted to build a new embassy in Abuja. In the end no embassy was built in Abuja; the government rents premises in Lagos for the embassy.

Over Sh80 million from the sale is not satisfactorily accounted for and a lawyer who acted for the ministry in the transaction is still demanding millions of shillings as legal fees.

In Brussels, the ministry lost an estimated Sh84 million by asking the owner of a building, more than 90 years old, to include the cost of valueless furniture in the price.

Sh200 billion Tatu City gets off the ground

Posted by Administrator on October 27, 2010

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 27 – The Master Plan for Kenya’s Sh200 billion mega real estate project, Tatu City, which will initially provide 1,800 entry level residential units has been launched.

The 2,500 acres development will be put up in Kiambu in 10 phases, providing much needed housing for 62,000 people, as well as business offices and shops, which are expected to attract a further 23,000 visitors a day.

Renaissance Group Chief Executive Officer Stephen Jennings said the first phase of the new development, which will be run by Tatu City Limited, is scheduled to start later this year with the third phase scheduled for completion in 2013.

“So far Sh8 billion has been invested. Sh20.1 billion will be invested for the next phase but over time it will be a multi-billion dollar project,” Mr Jennings said.

The Sh200 billion project will house an estimated 62,000 residents and offer commercial and recreation facilities, including a sports stadium.

Tatu City Limited Chairman Nahashon Nyagah said thirty-five percent of the initial scheme had been set aside for a natural green belt that will be maintained as a wetland while a further 15 percent is being earmarked for world class infrastructure and social amenities such as schools and hospitals.

Mr Nyagah said local and foreign investors are being drawn to Kenya’s property sector by returns which have outperformed stocks in the past 10 years.

Nairobi Metropolitan Development Minister Robinson Githae has pledged the government’s support for the project, which is expected to realise Sh20 billion and create 30,000 jobs into the economy.

Mr Githae said the exercise will be the first to go through a pilot one-stop licensing process which is aimed at reducing bureaucratic red-tape in government.

Tatu City will be “self-governing” and taxes collected within the area will be spent by the development’s managers. Mr Jennings said he hoped the project would serve as a catalyst to foreign direct investment in sub-Saharan Africa.

“There will be a few ups and downs but political risk is coming down and the economic climate is improving. We are very excited and we are certainly not worried about Kenya,” he added.

Growing incomes and large numbers of young people moving to urban centres are fuelling demand for housing across all asset classes and construction was the economy’s fastest growing sector in the second quarter of 2010.

Kenya’s population of 38.6 million is increasing by one million annually and Nairobi city authorities are expanding its boundaries to outlaying towns to ease pressure.

The Tatu City development project is partly funded by Renaissance Capital of Moscow and by local Kenyan business people.
