WIFI picks 7 Kenyan films for LA festival

Posted by Administrator on January 27, 2011

January 26, 2010 – A total of seven Kenyan films have been chosen for screening at the WIFI (Women In Film International) mini-festival which kicks off in Los Angeles, USA on March 5.

The films include Pumzi by Wanuri Kahiu, Nathan Collett’s Kibera Kid, and the documentary by Wanjiru Kinyanjui, Africa Is a Woman’s Name.

The films were picked out of hundreds submitted to the WIFI Committee for the event, where films, arts, food and culture from Kenya will be showcased at a one-day extravaganza.

This year’s will be the 5th Annual Film Shorts Program, and it will be the first time a country from Africa features, taking the mantle from Palestine and South Korea among others.

It’s as close to Hollywood as it comes and could prove invaluable to the names on screen as they will be one on of the sets at Universal Studios in California.

The other films that will feature include The Knife Grinder’s Tale by R.L. HOOKER, the documentary Picha Mtaani by Christine Kinyanjui and Toni Kamau, Subira from Ravneet Chadha and Ekwa Msangi-Omari’s Taharuki.

But it’s not all about film; culture and arts are also an integral part of the fete. As such renowned author Ngugi Wa Thiongo will be present, and so will award winning Kenyan artist Wangeci Mutu.

Racheal Wangui, Wawi Amasha, and Githinji Wa Mbire, all who live in the United States, will be exhibiting some of their artwork as well.

WIFI is a grouping of women in film who are “committed to fostering an interactive and cultural bond with other countries by discovering, promoting and supporting the ideas and efforts of entertainment professionals (especially women) throughout the world”.

Ticket sales for the event will be sold from next week ahead of the event, which has put been together by WIFI with support from Universal Studios and the Kenyan Consulate in Los Angeles.

Kamukunji MP loses seat in poll petition

Posted by Administrator on January 27, 2011

Kamukunji Member of Parliament Simon Mbugua has lost his seat after a Nairobi court annulled his election on Thursday.

Lady Justice Mary Ang ‘awa said the election was compromised and the Returning Officer made an error in announcing incomplete results.

In making the ruling, the judge said the results lacked integrity and the MP was therefore not validly elected.

The election petition was filed by Ibrahim Ahmed who contested the seat on an Orange Democratic Party (ODM) in the 2007 General Elections.

The case has been presided over by three judges since it was filed in 2008, with two, Lady Justice Kalpana Rawal and Justice Fred Ochieng disqualifying themselves.

Lady Justice Rawal disqualified herself from the case in June last year after receiving threatening messages from unknown people while Justice Ochieng, did the same in October after remarks were made against him that he had been influenced.

The PNU MP becomes the ninth legislator to lose in seat in election petitions in the life of the Tenth Parliament.

Other who lost their seats include: Joel Onyancha (Bomachoge), Omingo Magara (South Mugirango), Chirau Ali Mwakwere (Matuga), Bishop Margaret Wanjiru (Starehe), Dick Wathika (Makadara), George Thuo (Juja) and Abdirahman Hassan (Wajir South).

Of these, only Cabinet minister Chirau Mwakere and Bishop Wanjiru retained their seats.

Kenyan mother ‘cursed’ with six sets of twins

Posted by Administrator on January 27, 2011

UPDATE: Thank you to all those who responded to this story. Many of you have written asking how you can help Gladys and her children. We at Jambonewspot.com were able to  make contact with her parish priest Father Augustine Muyonga of the St Marks Catholic Church in Nzoia.
Father Augustine informed us that she is living in a “pathetic” state. The parishioners are hoping to try and get her a piece of land where she can be farming and feed her children. According to Fr. Augustine, Gladys has been given a small shelter where she is living but there are no beddings, chairs and they have no food.
Fr. Augustine hopes that they will able to get enough wellwishers to help her get a simple house and if all goes well, they can get her a small piece of land where she can be making some livelihood.
If you want to help and you can write to Fr Augustine at augustinemuyonga@yahoo.com. If you want to call him directly or would want the parish’s account number where you can send your donations, please send an email to tgkaranja@jambonewspot.com and we will give you the phone number and the account number individually.
Additionally, the writer of the BBC story Mr Muliro Telewa wishes to thank all those who have responded wishing to help.

By Muliro Telewa

Most women would struggle to cope with six sets of twins but for Gladys Bulinya it is even more difficult – as many people in her part of Kenya think twins are cursed.

Her relatives will have nothing to do with her, and her husband left her, fearing she was jinxed, after the sixth pair of twins arrived last year.

Gladys Bulinya’s non-identical twins

  • 1993: John and James
  • 1999: Duncan and Dennis
  • 2003: Mercy and Faith
  • 2005: Carren and Ivy
  • 2007: Purpose and Swin
  • 2010: Baraka and Prince

So the 35-year-old lives alone with 10 of her 12 children in a one-roomed grass-thatched house, a few miles from the shore of Lake Victoria.

Sitting outside her small home in the village of Nzoia, she recites the birthdays of her children with ease.

“John and James were born in 1993,” she starts, shading her eyes from the sun’s rays.

She explains that she got pregnant at high school – but her boyfriend was too young to marry her.

Her sorrow then turned to shock, when her own family ordered her to leave the babies at the district hospital for adoption.

They told her that the Bukusu people, to which her family belongs, believe twins bring bad luck – and that unless one of them dies, it means certain death for one or both parents.

The Bukusu tradition of eliminating the second twin is no longer practised, though occasional cases of infanticide are still reported in rural areas of western Kenya.

Forced marriage

“Start Quote

The lady should have undergone sterilisation after discovering that men were using and dumping her”

End Quote Margaret Khanyunya School director

Luckily, Ms Bulinya says, when her boyfriend’s father learned the twins had been abandoned, he took them in and has cared for them ever since. (He is from a different ethnic group, the Kalenjin.)

But her troubles did not stop there. Five years later she fell in love with and married a primary school teacher.

She was living with his family when she gave birth to her second set of twins, Duncan and Dennis.

Fearing she had brought them a bad omen – and that someone would die – her in-laws chased her away.

“I was put on a motorcycle taxi with my twins and sent to my father’s home,” she says.

Yet again, however, her family had no sympathy. Still considering her cursed, they did not allow her on to their property.

The Bukusu

  • The largest tribe – about one million strong – of the Luhya nation
  • Many live in the fertile Western Province of Kenya, on the shore of Lake Victoria, or in the neighbouring Rift Valley Province

Instead, they quickly organised another marriage for her, to a man 20 years her senior.

He agreed to the alliance, she says, as he had not expected to marry at his age.

But more twins followed.

“Mercy and Faith were born in 2003 and Carren and Ivy in 2005, Purpose and Swin in 2007,” Ms Bulinya says.

It was the arrival of Baraka and Prince last year, that led to her husband walking out.

“I now have to do lots of odd jobs to feed my 10 children because I do not know where he is, and he is also too old to work even if he were around,” she says.

A few of the children attend the local junior school.

Gladys Bulinya with her youngest twins
Gladys Bulinya says she misses her eldest boys – and last saw them two years ago

The five-year-old girls take it in turns to care for five-month-old Baraka and Prince, while their mother is out weeding plots or doing washing for neighbours.

Eleven-year-old Dennis has been given a scholarship to a private boarding school nearby, while his twin Duncan looks after the livestock for a retired teacher.

“I have decided to sponsor one of them – that is all I can afford,” Margaret Khanyunya, director of St Iddah Academy, told the BBC.

Duncan’s monthly ration of maize for his herding duties is enough to feed the rest of the family.

So the family of twins, often ostracised by the community, just about scrapes a living.

But even Ms Khanyunya, a benefactor, is critical of Ms Bulinya’s situation.

How Likely Is It?

Dr Maggie Blott, a spokesperson for the Royal College of Obsetricians and Gynaecologists, says:

The chances of having six sets of twins is extremely low, though once you have one set of twins, you are more likely to have another – and once you have two sets, you are more likely to have a third.

If a woman repeatedly has non-identical twins, her ovaries are regularly producing two eggs rather than one.

In Britain, the chance of having twins is one in 80, in Africa it is higher.

I’m not sure anyone knows the chances of having a second or third set of twins – there probably isn’t that much information out there. But all obstetricians have stories of a woman who has had twins having twins again. I have a patient who had twins followed by triplets.

Twinning runs in families too. A woman who is a twin herself has a higher chance of giving birth to twins.

“The lady should have undergone sterilisation after discovering that men were using and dumping her,” she says.

Ms Bulinya says she has no regrets and sees all her children as God’s blessings.

However, she admits that she has now reluctantly been sterilised, “against the wishes of my church”, as she could not cope with any more children.

“I am a Catholic. When I made the decision I asked for God’s forgiveness and I am sure God understands and will forgive me for doing that.”

The one thing that really upsets her, she says, is the absence of her 17-year-old twins.

She weeps when she recalls their last meeting, two years ago, at their circumcision, a ceremony which marks a teenage boy’s rite of passage to a man.

At the gathering, each parent must hand over their son to the community elders for the circumcision.

“I was invited to the occasion and asked twice to pick my sons from among the crowd of 30 boys,” she explains.

“In both cases I picked the wrong children and my heart still bleeds each time I think of that day.”

Man charged with attempted murder in hammer attack

Posted by Administrator on January 26, 2011

Gideon Kibiwott Maiyo, 29, appeared before a judge charged with attempted murder of Elizabeth Cherito Kogo,29, in Wichita over the weekend.

Gideon Kibiwott Maiyo, 29, appeared before a judge charged with attempted murder of Elizabeth Cheruto Kogo,29, in Wichita over the weekend.

WICHITA — A man who police say nearly killed a woman early this week by repeatedly striking her in the head with a hammer was charged this afternoon with attempted first-degree murder.

Gideon K. Maiyo, 29, is accused of beating Elizabeth Kogo, 29, in an apartment in the 8100 block of East Harry on Sunday night.

She was taken by ambulance to Wesley Medical Center, where she remained in critical condition today.

Police said Maiyo left the apartment after the beating but was arrested after crashing his vehicle on the Kansas Turnpike.

Police said Maiyo and Kogo are Kenyan nationals who have been in Wichita since 2008.

Police said Maiyo is the defendant in a pending misdemeanor battery case stemming from an incident that occurred late last year. Kogo was the alleged victim in the case.

Police said Kogo was cooperating with them in the battery case but asked that no restraining order be issued against Maiyo.

District Judge Warren Wilbert set Maiyo’s bond at $100,000 and scheduled a Feb. 9 preliminary hearing. The Public Defender’s Office was appointed to represent him.

Kenyan killed in Uganda in bid to escape ‘Mututho Laws’

Posted by Administrator on January 26, 2011

A Kenyan man’s bid to escape the stiff drinking regulations brought about by the Alcohol and Drinks Control Act ended tragically after he was found dead in Malaba, Uganda.

Uganda’s Malaba police have already arrested two people including a bar owner and an attendant to help unravel the mystery surrounding the death of the Kenyan.

The man identified by police as William Kones from Mt. Elgon District is said to have crossed the border into Uganda and into a pub dubbed Dunia Hii where he proceeded to enjoy his drink until late into the night.

However, sources said Kones ran short of cash and could not clear his bill, earning the wrath of the bar owner and his attendant.

Eyewitnesses alleged that Kones was beaten senseless and left alone for over 10 hours before he succumbed to the injuries he had sustained.

The officer in charge of Malaba, Uganda police station, Joseph Mwesige confirmed the arrest of the bar owner and the attendant who were helping the police with investigations.

The police boss said the two had denied beating the Kenyan to death, adding that police officers were interrogating the two before preferring charges against them.

However, police on the Kenyan side of Malaba town said they had not been informed of the death of the Kenyan.

The stringent new alcohol laws (dubbed Mututho laws after the Naivasha legislator who was the architect of the Act) have seen Kenyans in Malaba crossing in droves into the Uganda side where the alcohol laws are a bit lenient.

The new rules restrict drinking of any form of alcohol in retail bars and restaurants to between 5pm and 11pm on weekdays and 2pm to 11pm on weekends.

Efforts by some bar owners to stop the implementation of the law failed early this week after the High Court dismissed their case.

Wichita woman found unresponsive with hammer lodged in her skull

Posted by Administrator on January 26, 2011

UPDATE: We have now been able to confirm that Elizabeth Kogo and Gideon Maiyo had applied for a marriage licence in April 2010 in Wichita, KS. We have also been able to confirm that Gideon Maiyo was arrested on the night of 01/23/2011 and booked at around 12.49 am on 01/24/2011. He is being charged with ATTEMPTED 1ST DEGREE MURDER.

————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Love should never, ever hurt this bad.

In a disturbing story out of Wichita, a neighbor called the police Sunday to report a loud disturbance at a nearby apartment, according to KSN. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a 29-year-old Kenyan woman with severe head trauma from being struck repeatedly with the claw end of a hammer. The hammer was still lodged in her skull.
Police say the suspect, who is also a Kenyan national and either the woman’s boyfriend or husband, had taken his car and fled by the time police got to the apartment. He crashed into a median on the Kansas Turnpike and was found running in between vehicles before being arrested by the Highway Patrol.

The woman is unresponsive and in “very critical condition,” say police.

This isn’t the first case in which the woman and man have been named as victim and defendant, respectively. A domestic-violence case in September is still pending. Sadly, the police department said the woman specifically requested that the man not be issued a restraining order.
The man faces charges of attempted first-degree murder for bludgeoning his lover with a hammer. Maybe it’s time for that restraining order — and if the accusations are true, a hell of a lot more than that.

WICHITA — A 29-year-old Kenyan woman identified as Elizabeth Kogo was in “very critical condition” this morning after being struck repeatedly with a hammer, and a man described as her boyfriend or husband has been arrested after his car crashed on the Kansas Turnpike, police said.

Elizabeth Kogo also is an alleged victim and he is the defendant in a pending misdemeanor battery case stemming from an incident late last year in which he had been arrested, Wichita police Lt. Ken Landwehr said.

The woman was cooperating with police in the previous case but asked that no restraining order be issued against the man, said Landwehr, the homicide unit commander.

The man, 29, is being held in the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder, Landwehr said. The investigation will be presented to prosecutors this week.

The woman and the man  have been in Wichita since 2008, Landwehr said. The woman has a child who is not living in the United States.

Police were not releasing her name (now released) because her relatives had not been notified of her injuries. Apparently, none of her family lives in the United States.

A little before 7 p.m. Sunday, police responded to a neighbor’s report of a disturbance between two people at an apartment in the 8100 block of East Harry. Officers found the woman with severe head injuries. It appears she had been struck multiple times with a hammer, Landwehr said.

An EMS crew took her to Wesley Medical Center, where she is in “very critical condition” and unresponsive, he said.

The boyfriend or husband left in a vehicle that crashed on the Kansas Turnpike, and the Kansas High Patrol arrested the man after he was reported to be running between vehicles on the highway some distance from the one-car crash.

According an earlier report, the man was arrested just before 8 p.m. Sunday by Kansas Highway Patrol troopers near 127th Street East and the Kansas Turnpike.

The Casanova Club

Posted by Administrator on January 25, 2011

Call it a god-given gift, or simply another feather on an already colourful political cap, but for several heads of states across the globe, their Casanova tendencies are but a pointer to their leadership qualities.

Topping the list of the most popular Don Juans in the club are South African President Jacob Zuma and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. But, unlike Zuma, who does his thing within the confines of his Zulu culture, the Italian premiere is famous not only for his Romeo side, but also for his high profile publicity stunts.

From corruption and image-enhancing cosmetic surgeries to cutting unethical anti-immigrant deals with Tripoli, the flair and pomp with which Berlusconi conducts his private life cuts the image of a debauch Roman emperor rather a country’s chief executive.

Top on the pile of sordid accusations against the tycoon-turned-politician are the infamous “bunga bunga” parties he is said to hold occasionally in his palatial villas across Italy. The Urban Dictionary defines ‘bunga bunga’ as an “erotic ritual that involves a powerful leader and several naked women”.

The latest episode in the 73-year-old’s dramatic lifestyle came to the limelight last October, when he intervened to secure the release of a teenage Moroccan belly dancer, Karima Kayek, who was arrested on suspicions of theft.

Berlusconi is said to have lied to the police that the teenage model was a relative of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. Kayak later claimed she had witnessed orgies between showgirls and guests in several of these bunga bunga gatherings that she attended at the premier’s residence in Milan.

In an interview with Italian newspaper La Repubblica, the 17-year-old said she was part of a 10-girl team hosted by Berlusconi during last year’s Valentine’s Day dinner, during which the Italian PM purportedly gave her cash, jewellery and an Audi R8 car worth $70,000 (Sh5.6 million).

Dalliance with the young

This, however, is not the first time that the media mogul has been accused of dalliance with underage girls. While filing divorce proceedings in 2009, his former wife Veronica Lario accused the ‘rogue billionaire’ of having a spicy affair with aspiring teenage model Noemi Leitizia.

Berlusconi’s wife was riled by, among other things, her husband’s attendance of Leitizia’s exclusive 18th birthday party, during which he gifted the stunning beauty with an $8,000 (Sh640,000) gold-and-diamond necklace.

“That really surprised me because he has never come to the 18th birthday parties of any of our children, despite being invited,” Lario was quoted by the Italian media as saying.

Besides serving as his bedroom toys and playthings, Berlusconi uses his cohorts to enlist feminine sexual appeal to win votes and prop the image of his administration. Georgia Stracquadanio, a government MP, caused an uproar across the political spectrum when he said it was “absolutely legitimate” for women to use their sexual appeal to advance their political career.

“To develop a career, everyone uses what they have. Even their bodies… it is absolutely legitimate,” the legislator was quoted by the English newspaper Daily Telegraph as saying. “Everyone should use their body as they see fit. As long as there is consent and there is no violence, then there’s no problem”.

The controversial politician went on to add that if a female MP admitted to having secured her position in exchange for sexual favours, it should not constitute grounds for resignation or embarrassment.

Although he was strongly and roundly condemned by members from across the political divide, Stracquadanio underlined the unacknowledged philosophy of his boss, who, in several occasions, has bypassed brain for beauty to install showgirls and models with no political experience in government and parliament.

The current minister of Tourism, Michella Brambilla, is a former Miss Italy, better known for her high heels and short skirts than providing leadership; while her Equal Opportunities counterpart, Mara Carfagna, used to pose semi-nude for men’s magazines.

As if to confirm the huge role looks play in his administration, the Italian premier bought diamond rings worth $1,850 (Sh140,000) each for his 37 women MPs as a Christmas gift last year.

Nearer home, although there might be many contenders to the infamous title of the “African Berlusconi”, South African President Jacob Zuma claims the crown with relative ease.

Apart from fathering 21 children from five wives and several women, Zuma seems to be buddies with scandals, especially those of a sexual nature. Just before he tied the knot with Wife Number Five, the ANC leader is said to have fathered a baby girl with Sonono Khoza, a 39-year-old divorcee who is the daughter of Irvin Khoza, the Orlando Pirates boss, chief organiser of the 2010 World Cup and a close friend of Zuma’s.

And this is not the first time the studious Zuma has been accused of being sexually embroiled with a friend’s daughter. In 2005 he was entangled in a career-threatening court case in which he was charged with raping the daughter of a deceased friend at his home in Forest Town.

Although the then 31-year-old woman was said to be HIV-positive, it was alleged that Zuma had unprotected sex, but he explained that he had taken a shower immediately to avoid contracting the virus.

Setting a bad example

The statement evoked condemnation from the judge, health experts, AIDS activists and the general public, all of whom accused the ANC leader of setting a bad example in a country where an estimated five million people are HIV-positive (the highest number in the world). Fezeka Kuzwayo, the woman in question, has since been granted asylum in the Netherlands.

During the World Cup last year, the president’s name was yet again in the headlines for the wrong reasons after media reports revealed his second wife, Nompumelelo Ntuli, was carrying a baby fathered by one of her private bodyguards.

But, despite all these embarrassing incidences, the 68-year-old head of state is unapologetic about his marital and sexual lifestyle, saying it’s part and parcel of his Zulu roots.

“That’s my culture. It does not take anything from me, from my political beliefs and everything, including the belief on the equality of women,” the South African leader told CNN during the World Economic Forum in Switzerland last year, adding that the reason many people faulted his polygamous nature was that they “think their culture is the only right one… the only one accepted by God.”

Far up north, although he is not as explicit and blatant with his bedroom matters as Jacob Zuma, Col Muammar Gaddafi’s close ties with female company are a widely documented affair.

The Libyan strongman is famous for tagging along a huge entourage of women bodyguards whenever he travels abroad.

Popularly known as “The Amazons”, their strikingly gorgeous faces are said to belie the deadly potential cultivated through years of sophisticated military training and martial arts combat drills.

These skills — and a deep, loving devotion — are rumoured to have saved Gaddafi from several assassination attempts, with one of the loyal ladies reportedly taking a bullet meant for the leader in Athens in 1998.

The exalted status of these superwomen affords them luxuries that the traditional Arab woman can only dream of. They wear makeup, expose their long flowing hair, sport matching camouflaged military uniforms, and, sometimes, carry big guns, a feat that has earned them the description “Bond Girls” who “wear Kalashnikovs like Gucci fashion accessories”.

Ruthless aides

Besides propping the colonel’s image when he makes grand entrees in functions and standing outside his Bedouin tent, these femme fatales are known to be ruthless against anyone who stands on their way, from doormen to waiters and foreign security personnel.

The flashy bodyguards caused a stir in Lagos during an international summit in 2006 when Nigerian police and airport officials, amazed by the sheer amount of weapons and ammunition that Gaddafi’s 200-plus bodyguards were carrying, refused them entry into the country.

A heated argument ensued between the Gaddafi beauties and the Nigerians. The Libyan leader, not used to playing second fiddle to anyone, angrily stormed off, intending to walk some 40 kilometres to the capital before being persuaded to return to the airport lounge. It took the intervention of the then Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo to convince the reluctant Libyans to relinquish their weapons.

“Without the leader, women in Libya would be nothing. He gave us life. I am ready to die for him anytime,” one of the guards told the BBC Focus on Africa magazine. “He is a father, a brother and a friend in whom you can confide”.
